Texas CME Guide
Every 24 months, physicians must complete a minimum of 48 CME credits. These requirements align with the biennial registration period rather than the calendar year. Key components include:
- 24 Formal Hours: At least 24 credits must be from formal Category 1 or 1A courses. These can include courses accredited by the ACCME, approved by the American Academy of Family Physicians, designated for AOA Category 1-A credit, or approved by TMA based on AMA standards.
- Medical Ethics/Professional Responsibility: Out of the 24 formal hours, at least 2 must cover medical ethics and/or professional responsibility, such as risk management, domestic or child abuse. These courses must be approved for ethics or professional responsibility credit.
- Pain Management and Prescription of Opioids: Additionally, 2 of the 24 formal hours must address pain management and safe opioid prescription practices.
- Human Trafficking Prevention: A course in human trafficking prevention, approved by HHSC, is required within these formal hours.
- 24 Informal Hours: These can include self-study, attending hospital lectures or rounds not approved for formal CME, or case conferences.
- Excess Credit: A maximum of 48 excess credit hours may be carried over, but not in the categories of medical ethics/professional responsibility or pain management.
